Luxury and opulence are often the first things that come to mind when one thinks of the UAE. But beyond the glitz and glamour, the UAE is a country that has fostered tolerance and created a microcosm of people, cultures and traditions from all over the world.

ENQUIRE NOW

In a region that has been often fraught with conflict, the UAE has been a beacon of hope since its formation in 1971. The country’s leaders have worked tirelessly to promote peace and understanding, both within its borders and beyond.

Founding Fathers

The founding fathers of the UAE were major proponents of the philosophy of tolerance. Beyond its humanitarian value, tolerance was considered a vital component of promoting inclusivity, unity, cohesiveness and holistic development of the nation.

These values have since been strengthened and taken forward by the various leaders across the seven emirates of the UAE. In line with legacy of Sheikh Zayed’s vision, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister of UAE and Ruler of Dubai has introduced a number of initiatives and projects that has propagated peace, tolerance and respect while shunning extremism, violence and racism.

In addition to establishing an International Institute for Tolerance that aimed to promote the values of tolerance, coexistence, acceptance and openness in the UAE, HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid also instituted the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Tolerance Award to develop young Arab leaders within the field of tolerance and to support intellectual, cultural, and media promotion of tolerance and openness. Additionally, the UAE also has a Ministry of Tolerance, which works to promote tolerance and understanding between different groups.

Concrete initiatives

The UAE’s efforts to promote tolerance are not just limited to words on paper. The country has taken concrete steps to ensure that everyone who calls it home feels welcome and safe. For instance, the UAE declared 2019 as the Year of Tolerance, an initiative that celebrated the country’s diversity and promoted coexistence. As part of the Year of Tolerance, the UAE organised a series of events and initiatives that focused on celebrating the country’s rich tapestry of cultures.

The UAE’s commitment to tolerance is also evident by the fact that it became the first Arab nation to ratify the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. This move sent a strong message to the world that the UAE is a country that respects the rights of all its citizens, regardless of their background or beliefs. The UAE’s efforts to foster tolerance have not gone unnoticed. In 2018, the country was recognised by the United Nations as a “global role model” for tolerance.

DAMAC regularly organises several family-oriented events such as food and handicrafts markets, movie screenings and other fun activities like the DAMAC cyclethon and Ramadan Sports Festival held at its communities, DAMAC Hills and DAMAC Hills 2, last year.

Internally, the same ethos is applied with more than 74 nationalities working at the Company, celebrating their respective cultural holidays side by side. And since DAMAC has always valued and appreciated the contributions of its employees, the company follows a rigorous internal engagement plan that takes into consideration its employee's mental and physical health, and the importance of building a cohesive healthy team to be able to deliver success.
